A Day on the Farm – Nurturing Life and Growing Our Community

Today, I’m thrilled to share with you the vibrant life bustling on our farm, from early morning feedings to some exciting new additions to our animal family. It’s a beautiful day to explore the simple joys and the hands-on work that make farm life so rewarding.
Morning Rituals: Feeding Time at Dexter’s World
Starting the day with feeding our animals is not just a routine; it’s a moment to connect with nature and the creatures that share our space. This morning, I’m scattering corn grits for our chickens, including a very spirited Bantam rooster. Watching them eagerly gather for breakfast is a reminder of the simple pleasures that life on the farm brings.
New Arrivals: Purebred Anglonubian Goats
We recently welcomed a group of purebred Anglonubian goats, a beautiful addition that marks a significant step towards our goal of establishing a dairy project on the farm. These goats, known for their high-quality milk production, are envisioned to be the cornerstone of our future endeavors in producing goat’s milk, cheese, and butter.
Settling In: Ensuring a Smooth Transition
The transition for these goats has been managed with great care. Adjusting to a new home can be stressful, so we’re closely monitoring their health and gradually introducing them to the local feed. Today, we’ll be providing them with vitamins to help them recover from the journey and ensure they adapt well to their new environment.
Cultivating Growth: Thriving Gardens and Unexpected Visitors
Our garden is flourishing with squash plants laden with fruits, ready for the upcoming harvest. This morning brought a surprise visitor—a baby crow discovered perched atop the garden. While attempting to feed it bananas was unsuccessful, it’s encounters like these that add an extra layer of wonder to our daily life here.
Harnessing Nature: Innovative Farming Techniques
One of my recent experiments involved allowing squash vines to grow without additional support, a method that turned out to be quite successful. This discovery has proven that with the right conditions, nature can often exceed our expectations, challenging preconceived notions of traditional farming methods.
Looking Ahead: Expanding Our Facilities
As we continue to develop our farm, plans are in place to enhance our infrastructure to better serve both our animals and visitors:
- Electrification of the Boathouse: We’re upgrading our boathouse with modern electrical installations to improve aesthetics and functionality, making it a welcoming space for visitors.
- Construction of a Mini Building: This new facility will house a restaurant on the upper floor and a pet shop on the ground floor, showcasing our farm produce and providing a unique dining experience.
Education and Engagement: Building a Community
Our goal is to create an environment where visitors can not only relax and eat but also learn about sustainable farming practices. By sharing our daily life and the operational side of our farm, we hope to inspire and educate those interested in agriculture and animal husbandry.
