A Morning With Dexter: Sustaining Our Goats with Miracle Plants

Good morning, everyone! Dexter here, welcoming you back to another day on the farm. Today, I’m excited to share a glimpse into my morning routine and introduce you to one of the most beneficial plants we grow here for our livestock—Madre de Agua (Trichantera gigantea), also known as the “miracle tree.”

Morning Chores: Gathering Goat Food

As the sun peeks over the horizon, my day starts with gathering food for our goats. Behind me, you’ll notice overgrown trees—a boon for our farm, as these goats act like natural shredders. Today, I’m focusing on a fantastic plant that’s not only popular among our pigs and chickens but is essential for our goats as well—Madre de Agua.

Madre de Agua: A Superfood for Livestock

Madre de Agua is a high-protein plant that’s incredibly nutritious for animals. The leaves are lush and juicy, packed with up to 40% protein, making it an excellent feed for our farm residents. This plant’s fast growth makes it a sustainable and cost-effective feed source, reducing our reliance on commercial feeds.

Planting and Propagating Madre de Agua

Planting Madre de Agua is straightforward and rewarding. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Choose a Young Stem: Select young branches as they root faster.
  2. Cutting: Count four nodes on the stem and make a cut.
  3. Preparation: Remove the lower leaves to prevent rot.
  4. Planting: Stick the prepared cuttings into the soil, ensuring at least two nodes are buried.

This method ensures a quick take and rapid growth, allowing you to harvest leaves within months.

A Taste Test: Why Animals Love It

Curious about its popularity, I tasted the young leaves myself—they remind me of guava, sweet and pleasant. This sweetness explains why every animal on the farm, from turkeys to rabbits, adores this plant. It’s even safe and nutritious for aquatic animals like catfish and tilapias when chopped finely.

Sustainable Farming Practices

Integrating plants like Madre de Agua into our farming practices not only improves the health of our animals but also enhances the sustainability of our operations. By using natural resources and reducing waste, we can maintain a balance with nature while providing for the farm.
