The Joy of Harvest at Dexter’s World: Growing Lady Fingers and Red Squash

Hi guys, things are really getting better on the farm! Welcome back to Dexter’s World channel. Today, we’re diving into the exciting world of harvesting lady fingers and supporting our growing red squash. This journey of sustainable farming is not only rewarding but also educational. Let’s get started!

Harvesting Lady Fingers: Nature’s Bounty

One of the highlights of our farm is harvesting lady fingers, also known as okra. These vegetables are a delight to grow and even more delightful to harvest.

Why Harvest Young Lady Fingers?

  • Optimal Taste: Young lady fingers are tender and have a better taste.
  • Health Benefits: They are excellent for lowering cholesterol.
  • Natural Growth: Growing your food naturally ensures pesticide-free vegetables.

Watching these plants grow and yield fruits is truly fascinating. Planting seeds, nurturing them, and finally harvesting the fruits is a cycle that brings immense satisfaction and joy.

The Support System for Red Squash

Our red squash is growing beautifully, but with growth comes the challenge of providing adequate support. These fruits can get quite heavy, and without proper support, the stems might not be able to bear the weight.

Steps to Support Red Squash:

  1. Using Nets: Design a hammock-like support system using nets.
  2. Tie Wires: Secure the squash using tie wires to prevent them from detaching.
  3. Regular Checks: Inspect the fruits regularly for any signs of insect damage.

Creating a support system for the squash not only helps in maintaining the plant’s health but also ensures a better yield. This is particularly important for larger fruits that can weigh up to 3 kilos.

Natural Pest Control

In our quest to maintain an organic farm, we’ve developed our own natural pesticide. This helps in keeping our vegetables safe from pests without harming the environment or our animals.

Ingredients for Natural Pesticide:

  • Nim Tree Extract: Effective in repelling insects.
  • Ginger Juice: Adds a stinky smell that deters pests.
  • Dishwashing Liquid: Helps in spreading the solution evenly.

Using natural pesticides ensures that our vegetables remain healthy and pesticide-free, providing confidence in the food we grow and eat.

Expanding Our Integrated Farming

We are continually working towards expanding our integrated farming system. This includes not only vegetables but also animals like hybrid goats, peacocks, and ostriches. The goal is to create a diverse and sustainable farm that serves as a learning center for visitors.

Future Plans:

  • Hybrid Goats: Arrival in mid-June.
  • Additional Peacocks and Ostriches: Enhancing the farm’s diversity.
  • Public Opening: Sharing our practices and knowledge with the community and visitors from abroad.

Building a Sustainable Future

Our farm is not just about growing food; it’s about creating a sustainable and educational environment. We’re building facilities, improving our infrastructure, and planning to offer overnight stays for visitors to experience natural farming firsthand.

Key Projects:

  • Rainwater Management: Ensuring a reliable water supply.
  • Visitor Facilities: Creating spaces for dining and learning.
  • Power and Lighting: Enhancing our boat house with electricity for better functionality.
