A Day at Dexter’s Farm: Feeding Animals and Harvesting Vegetables

Hello everyone, Dexter here! It’s a beautiful morning once again on the farm, and I’m excited to bring you along for another day filled with chores that breathe life into our little ecosystem. Early mornings are special here as they start with feeding our animals and prepping for a day of harvesting. Let’s dive into our daily routine and how we manage to maintain peace among our diverse farm inhabitants while embracing sustainable practices.

Feeding Time: Ensuring Peace Among the Farm Animals

Our farm is home to chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys, all of whom start their day quite hungrily. To avoid chaos and ensure that even the smallest duckling gets its share without being trampled, we’ve devised a feeding strategy that promotes peace. We spread out the food—today it’s fish—along a long line, allowing each animal to eat calmly without competing for space.

This method not only prevents injuries but also promotes a tranquil environment where all animals can enjoy their meals in harmony.

Integrated Farming: Turning Waste into Wealth

One of the cornerstones of our farming practice is sustainability, specifically through our integrated farming system. We make it a point to use everything biodegradable from kitchen scraps to manure. Today, I’ll be showing you how we turn our everyday kitchen waste into nutrient-rich compost.

Our compost bin is filled with eggshells, banana peels, carrot tops, and other vegetable scraps, transforming what would be waste into powerful compost for our plants. This not only reduces our waste but enhances our soil without the need for chemical fertilizers.

Harvesting Day: The Fruits of Our Labor

After ensuring our animals are well-fed and happy, it’s time to harvest some vegetables. However, it’s not always picture-perfect; pests are a real challenge. I want to show you the reality of farming—some of our petai (stink beans) plants have been hit by pests. Instead of reaching for harmful pesticides, we opt for organic solutions, balancing pest management with the health of our environment.

I also experimented with not using any sprays on one of the petai plants to demonstrate the stark difference proactive organic treatment can make.

Farm-to-Table: The True Taste of Freshness

As we wrap up our morning with the harvest, I’m reminded of the importance of growing our own food. It’s not just about having fresh produce but also about knowing what goes into our food—no hidden pesticides or harmful chemicals.

Today, I’ll be enjoying a farm-to-table breakfast that’s only possible because of the efforts we put into growing and nurturing our plants and animals with respect and care.
