Dexter’s World: Embracing Sustainable Living and Farm Innovations

Hello, dear friends and welcome back to Dexter’s World! It’s a beautiful day once again, and I’m thrilled to share with you some exciting developments and future plans for our farm. Our journey into sustainable living continues to evolve, and today, I’m eager to dive into our latest venture—integrating vegetable cultivation into our ecosystem and discussing future projects that promise to transform Dexter’s World into a more self-sufficient and eco-friendly haven.

Elevating Vegetables: A Swampy Challenge Overcome

Our farm’s latest project is a testament to innovation and resilience. Situated in a swampy area, the challenge was to create a conducive environment for vegetables like cucumbers, ampalaya (bitter gourd), and various types of squash to thrive. By elevating our bamboo structures, we’ve provided a space for these vegetables to crawl, ensuring they stay above the water and flourish. This initiative marks a significant stride towards self-sustainability as we aim to produce our own vegetables by 2024.

The Promise of Live Bearers: A Unique Integration

As our vegetables begin to crawl and create a natural shade, we plan to introduce live bearers such as guppies and mollies into the mix. By constructing wooden boxes lined up beneath the vegetable canopy, we’ll create a perfect habitat for these fish, protected from the direct sunlight. This innovative approach not only maximizes the use of space but also contributes to a balanced ecosystem within our farm.

Addressing Challenges: Birds, Ducks, and the Path Forward

Our journey is not without its challenges. Migratory birds, particularly kingfishers, pose a threat to our fish population. To counter this, we’re considering enclosing the area with nets and providing adequate lighting. Despite these hurdles, our philosophy remains focused on finding solutions rather than dwelling on problems. Our ducks, known for their intelligence, have shown that with proper training, they can coexist harmoniously with our vegetable gardens without causing harm.

Major Projects on the Horizon: 2024 and Beyond

Looking ahead, we have ambitious plans to further develop the farm. From installing a comprehensive water system and electrification to exploring solar energy options, our goal is to enhance the farm’s infrastructure for a more efficient and eco-friendly operation. Additionally, we’re excited about the potential of adding an aviary near the boathouse and improving connectivity with Wi-Fi installations for our visitors.

Celebrating Achievements: Sustainable Animal Feed Production

One of our proudest achievements to date is our ability to produce our own animal feed, significantly reducing expenses while promoting a natural diet. From superworms to azola, water sprouts, and grated coconuts, these sustainable feed options have played a crucial role in the healthy and cost-effective growth of our animals. It’s a victory we cherish deeply as it embodies the essence of sustainable farming.
