Dexter’s World: A Journey into Sustainable Farming and Rabbitry Management
Welcome back to Dexter’s World! As we journey together through the challenges and successes of farm life, today, I want to dive into the diverse world of sustainable farming practices and the specific care of raising rabbits—a journey that not only brings joy but also fosters a deeper connection with nature.
Embracing Sustainable Farming
In our quest to expand the farm with various animals, we’ve found great success in breeding rabbits, ducks, chickens, and geese. Our approach is rooted in sustainability, focusing on sourcing food directly from our environment. We’ve previously discussed the benefits of azolla, water spinach, banana trunks, Moringa, and today, we’re excited to introduce another valuable food source: the stems and leaves of the Taro plant.
The Nutritious Taro
Taro plants are not only a versatile and nutritious food source for our farm animals but also a staple in human diets. These plants thrive in low-lying areas with soft soil and water, growing effortlessly in our farm’s ecosystem. We’re actively propagating Taro to encircle our fish pond, providing a dual-purpose solution that benefits both our animals and our table.
Preparing Taro for Our Animals
Our process of preparing Taro for our animals involves collecting the stems, slicing them, and cooking them to ensure they’re easily digestible. This mixture, combined with rice, becomes a wholesome breakfast for our chickens and ducks, ensuring they receive all the necessary nutrients without incurring high costs. This practice underlines our commitment to minimizing expenses while maximizing the health and productivity of our farm animals.
Managing a Rabbitry with Care
Our rabbitry has grown significantly, with over 30 bunnies now calling our farm home. Training them to adapt to grass as part of their diet is a gradual process that requires attention to detail to avoid health issues. We’ve learned that rabbits, especially the younger ones, need a balanced diet primarily based on pellets, with grasses introduced slowly as they mature.
Key to Healthy Rabbits: Diet and Cleanliness
Diet and cleanliness are paramount in rabbitry management. Providing the correct food and maintaining a clean environment are critical to preventing diseases such as diarrhea and mange. Our experiences have taught us the importance of air-drying grasses before feeding them to our rabbits and ensuring they have constant access to clean water.
