Welcome Back to Dexter’s World: Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Farm Life
Hi everyone, it’s another beautiful day and welcome back to Dexter’s World! Today, I want to share with you the resilience of our farm amidst some of the challenges we’ve faced, including last night’s heavy downpour which caused a bit of chaos here. Despite these hurdles, we continue to push forward, making necessary adjustments and expanding our capabilities.
After the Storm: Quick Response and Recovery
Last night, we experienced a significant downpour that led to unexpected flooding across parts of the farm. Thankfully, due to our preparation with filling materials, we managed to mitigate much of the damage. However, we did face some losses, particularly with our duck eggs which were unfortunately soaked and spoiled by the floodwaters.
Despite this setback, it’s crucial to learn from every situation. Today, I gathered the spoiled eggs to repurpose them into a nutritious breakfast, turning a loss into a gain where possible. It’s these moments that test our foresight and adaptability as farmers.
Expanding the Farm’s Landscape
This morning, I took the opportunity to work on expanding the plain field. By adding stones to low-lying areas, we are gradually elevating the terrain to prevent future waterlogging. This expansion is not just about recovery; it’s about setting the stage for future growth. We plan to extend our housing for chickens and other animals, ensuring they have safe and comfortable spaces to thrive.
A Tour of Our Efforts and Innovations
Let me take you on a brief tour of what we’ve been up to:
The New Boat House
We are in the process of constructing a new, larger boat house. Measuring 22 meters in length and 6 meters wide, this two-story structure will host our pet shop on the ground floor, allowing visitors to interact with and adopt our farm-bred animals. The upper level will serve as an extension of our hospitality, offering space for relaxation and dining.
Coffee Shop Progress
Adjacent to our boat house, the coffee shop I’ve often spoken about in previous vlogs is coming to fruition. We’re working tirelessly to finish the setup so we can welcome you to enjoy fresh coffee amidst the serene backdrop of our farm.
Lessons Learned and Future Plans
Every challenge brings valuable lessons. The flooding has taught us the importance of preparedness, especially during the rainy season. We’re learning to better anticipate weather changes and adjust our practices accordingly, such as ensuring our ducks have secure nesting areas to prevent future egg losses.
Moreover, we are excited about the potential to expand our vegetable gardening into a more structured greenhouse setup. This will allow us to continue providing fresh, pesticide-free produce like okra and squash, which have thrived unexpectedly well in our hanging garden setup, defying initial skepticism.
