Dexter’s World: Embracing Growth and Expansion in 2024
Welcome back to Dexter’s World, where our journey into sustainable farming continues to evolve with more exciting activities planned for the year 2024. This year, we’re set to broaden our horizons with more catfish, tilapias, chickens, turkeys, ducks, and a greater variety of vegetables. Our commitment to sustainable and integrated farming has never been stronger, as we aim to make the most of our swampy land through innovative techniques and hard work.
Early Morning Beginnings
Our day starts early, as early as 5:00 AM, to haul materials for our newest project – the goat house. Anticipation is high as we look forward to completing this structure, which promises to be a safe haven for our future goats. We’ve hired three skilled carpenters, and the progress has been remarkable, with four sturdy posts already erected. This goat house, crafted amidst the soft, water-abundant ground, stands as a testament to our determination to build a strong foundation for our farming ventures.
Vegetables Expansion Plans
Our vegetables thrive under our careful nurturing, watered diligently every afternoon to ensure their growth. We’re looking to expand our vegetable cultivation to include watermelons and red squash, taking advantage of our farm’s ample space. The challenge of the swampy terrain is tackled by constructing plant boxes, a creative solution that allows us to continue planting despite the wet conditions. The sight of flowering vegetables is a promising indication of the bountiful harvests to come.
Establishing Our Own Water System
A significant milestone for Dexter’s World Farm is the establishment of our own water system, ensuring a reliable water supply for our animals. While its suitability for human consumption is still under evaluation, this development marks a significant step towards self-sufficiency and sustainability on the farm.
Catfish and Tilapia Growth
Our fish ponds are thriving, with catfish growing impressively, and 1,650 heads of tilapias adjusting well to their new environment. We’ve reduced the feeding of commercial food, allowing the fish to benefit from the natural food available in the pond, such as worms and snails. This practice has contributed to their healthy growth, and we’re excited about the prospect of harvesting them in the coming months.
Welcoming New Breeds
The farm is also welcoming new breeds this year, including purebred Shamo chickens and a pair of turkeys. These additions are part of our goal to upgrade our breeding lines and diversify our farm’s offerings. The Shamo chickens, known for their height and heft, promise to be an interesting breed to raise. Meanwhile, our smallest chicken, the Bantam, has already produced a chick, and we’re looking forward to expanding this breed further.
Looking Ahead
As we move forward into 2024, our spirits are high with the anticipation of what’s to come. More goats, more fish, more poultry, and more vegetables – all are part of our vision for a more abundant and sustainable farm. We are constantly inspired to push the boundaries, innovate, and share our journey with you.
