A Day in the Life at Dexter’s Farm: From Dawn Till Dusk

Good morning, everyone! It’s Dexter here, and today I want to share with you the essence of our daily routine on the farm, a routine that begins as early as 4:00 AM. For those who have followed our journey, you know our commitment to farming, our animals, and the environment. This post is a continuation of that journey, showcasing not just the hard work but the joy and fulfillment it brings.

The Early Bird Routine

Waking up at the crack of dawn, the first order of business is to attend to our animals. It’s a responsibility I take to heart, ensuring they’re well-fed and ready for the day. Our last video highlighted the bountiful harvest of white squash we managed to sell at the market, thanks to our trusty rolling store. Today, we dive into the daily care of our animals, an essential aspect of our farm’s success.

Feeding Time: A Symphony of Clucks and Quacks

The coop is alive with anticipation each morning. The chickens, ever so eager, await their release to feast on the day’s meal. It’s a sight to behold, and a reminder of why we rise before the sun. Our commitment to our animals extends beyond just the chickens. We have ducks, geese, turkeys, and recently, nearly a hundred chicks have joined our farm family.

The Secret Ingredient: Azolla

Our feed mixture is a testament to our farm’s sustainability efforts. By incorporating azolla, kitchen scraps, and corn bran, we create a nutritious meal without incurring high costs. This practice not only supports our financial sustainability but contributes to the well-being of our animals. The azolla, in particular, has been a game-changer, offering a rich source of protein and promoting overall health.

A Community of Eaters

What’s unique about our feeding time is the communal aspect. Ducks, chickens, geese, and even turkeys share the feeding ground, embodying the spirit of family we foster here at Dexter’s World. This harmony among different species is a sight that never ceases to amaze and delights me.

The Importance of Shelter and Safety

Our care extends beyond just feeding. Sheltering our animals, especially the vulnerable ducklings from predators, is a priority. Our recent project, a goat house, is nearing completion, promising a safe haven for our goats. This addition not only enhances their well-being but will also contribute to the farm’s organic fertilizer production through goat manure.

This farm is more than just a place of work; it’s a living, breathing community where every day is a new adventure. From the early morning feedings to the evening checks, each moment is filled with purpose and passion.
