In fish farming, there are things we are not in control of. Sometimes it gives good results, sometimes it is very challenging and requires so much patience. When this happens, it is important that we have an alternative plans at hand so that the fish farm operation never stops.
Today, I will be answering random queries from various viewers around the globe. Some of them have been answered in my previous blogs, but I decided to include in this blog as these have been one of the most numbered queries from our viewers. Here are the few ones I was able to take note of;
How do you condition your water? The conditioning of the water is just easy. I just let it stay in the tank for a period of three days before putting the fishes in there.
How do you manage your baby Kois and what challenges do you experience? Every month we are producing thousands of baby Kois and harvest them when they are full grown. They are being sold in the pet store and in the neighboring provinces. One of the challenges I usually experience is the regular power interruption in our city. Since this is something I don’t have control about, I make sure the fishes are not at risk. In the events of power interruption, I refrain from giving the fishes some food. If power interruption occurs after they have been fed, I reduce half of the water in tank and fill in with new water.
Is hard boiled egg good for the fish in the absence of live foods? Absolutely yes! Eggs are good for the fish because they are rich in protein which is most needed by the fish. Duck eggs, quail eggs or chicken eggs will do.
What are important things to keep in mind in breeding fish? One thing I always take note of, aside from the quality of water and fish foods, is the number of fishes in one tank because overpopulation causes stress, diseases and malnutrition to the fish. When they are overcrowded, they will eat their kind as well.
Is it okay that different sizes of fishes are put together in one tank? Yes, for the meantime, but make sure to monitor their growth. When they grow larger in size, they have to be transferred to another tank to avoid congestion.
What’s the best thing in growing Japanese Koi? If growing Kois is just your hobby, it is good to put them in a concrete tank as long as the filtration system is properly managed. Make sure your submersible pump is in good condition.
How do you change the water in the tank? I simply remove the tube connected to the filter and put it down so that the water from the tank will be half-tank drained. Then put in new water. In this manner, I am able to maintain the health of the Koi by not disturbing them in the changing of water.
